Facebook, Instagram outage spreads to users around the globe

While Facebook and Instagram are still down for some users Whats App joins the list

Most of the conversation on Twitter was about the consumer side of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which all went down for hours on Wednesday, and were still offline by late afternoon. According to Dave Lee of the BBC, the last time Facebook experienced a crash like this was in 2008; and back then, Facebook didn't have anything like the number of users that it did now.

Though it is unclear what caused the outage, Facebook, which owns Instagram and messaging app Whatsapp, acknowledged the interruption on Twitter. Due to the outage advertisers are losing money and it seems that the company is planning to issue refunds to the advertisers.

Facebook, Messenger and Instagram were out primarily in major urban areas across the United States and Europe, along with parts of South America.

A third-party outage map suggested the problem was global - DownDetector monitors posts on other social networks for users mentioning a loss of service elsewhere.

Instagram is a lot more vague with their error and simply gives a bland message stating "we couldn't connect" and to just try again later.

And there's probably some other underground social media network your kids aren't telling you about.

The company says they haven't found any signs that the outage is linked to any DDoS attack that was speculated to happen earlier today.

Among those having a bit of fun at Facebook's expense were Canterbury Police, who issued a tongue-in-cheek tweet reminding Kiwis not to report the issue to any of its departments.

Users reported a variety of problems, from being unable to load the site at all to not being able to post comments.

Outages for large internet platforms like Facebook or YouTube aren't unusual, but in the past they have typically restored service within an hour or two.

While Facebook is down, Twitter is working and full of fun reactions.
