Facebook loses two important executives amid new privacy push

Product officer Chris Cox speaks at the first day of the social media week at the Landmark centre in Lagos Nigeria. Two top Facebook executives are leaving the company including Cox who

Facebook's top executive in charge of all products, Chris Cox, the longtime confidant of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving the company, the highest-level departure at the social media giant amid almost two years of sustained crises.

"It is with great sadness I share with you that after thirteen years, I've made a decision to leave the company", Cox wrote in his post.

It is also interesting to see the head of WhatsApp Chris Daniels leaving Facebook right now. The company announced it's planning to shift its focus towards privacy and protecting users' information, something it has failed to do in recent times.

Last May, Facebook underwent a major reorganization that placed Chris Cox in charge of Facebook's family of apps team and Chris Daniels in charge of WhatsApp.

"This will be a big project and we will need leaders who are excited to see the new direction through", wrote Cox, who was one of the first 15 engineers Facebook hired 13 years back. "This place will forever be a part of me". That path will determine whether Facebook can fix its tarnished image or continue to suffer a steady drip of unflattering headlines and rack up more executive departures.

Founding executives of Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp have also recently left the company. Facebook's chief security officer Alex Stamos departed and has warned the company against unbridled data collection.

Mr Daniels has watched over WhatsApp after the messaging service's founders, Jan Koum and Brian Acton, left the company over disagreements with Mr Zuckerberg previous year.

Zuckerberg said he has no plans to replace Cox, though Daniels will be replaced by Will Cathcart, another longtime Facebook veteran.

Daniels has been at Facebook almost nine years, and previously led the company's Internet.org effort, a project aimed at bringing internet access to developing countries.

Numerous changes Zuckerberg outlined involve duplicating some of WhatsApp's features in Facebook's other messaging apps.

Their departures come barely a week after Zuckerberg announced sweeping changes to Facebook, in order re-orient the social network around encryption and privacy.

Zuckerberg, in a separate post, said Cox had discussed the possibility of moving on "for a few years", but had remained for a transition period. "Facebook Inc.is a massive and evolving company, so it's only natural that in a company that large, not everyone will agree with every strategic change", she said.
