House Will Have to Vote on Impeachment, Despite Pelosi's Opposition

President Donald Trump delivers the State of the Union address as Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi look on at the Capitol in Washington D.C. Feb. 5 2019

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi laid down a firm marker against impeaching President Donald Trump, saying Monday the effort would divide the nation and is 'not worth it'.

However, Rep. Green, who has been pushing to impeach the president since Trump was elected, told C-SPAN Tuesday that he will "bring it (to) the floor of the House again", but declined to say when.

"We shouldn't impeach the president for political reasons and we shouldn't not impeach the president for political reasons", she told the Associated Press in November. "It's important that there is a transparent process".

A momentous question hanging over Washington is whether investigations into President Donald Trump will prompt the U.S. Congress to try to remove him from office through the impeachment process set out in the U.S. Constitution. While Mueller's report and investigations in Congress and by NY prosecutors could change the dynamic, for now, "Pelosi's right - he's not worth it, just in terms of obsessing over him".

Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, one of the lawmakers leading those investigations, said he agrees with Pelosi and Congress needs "to do our homework". "If we're presented with compelling evidence that the president committed impeachable offenses, I think we have to vote for impeachment". But the real nugget is her conclusion that it would take "something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan" to make it a good idea. As long as Republicans assert that they disagree the president should be impeached, the argument is, de facto, over, based on Pelosi's reasoning. "I'm representing my district", she said Monday evening, the Washington Post reported. Pelosi knows that a partisan rush to impeachment raises the risk of alienating voters in those moderate parts of the country.

Green said, "I don't like the way he puts that into policy, bigotry into policy".

"She says it has to be bipartisan, the evidence has to be overwhelming, which is what I've been saying", Nadler said.

"If we wait on Republicans, who are not going to buy in, then there won't be an impeachment", he said.

"It absolutely drives him nuts", she said. We don't know what they will be, and we don't really know how to know.

Some House Democrats have publicly agreed with her comments, but others feel not impeaching Mr. Trump would be a betrayal of their goal as members of the House majority.

"I think the speaker is absolutely right".

In a caucus meeting Tuesday morning, Pelosi encouraged Democrats to "keep our eye on the prize" as "we look at what this president is doing to this great country".

Democratic Representative Joe Courtney said in an interview impeachment "would probably be a very hard thing for the average American to swallow if we've got an election" looming with Trump on the ballot.

'I'm not for impeachment. But now that Democrats have the opportunity to impeach, it's looking more likely they will refrain from taking that dramatic step, despite pressure from the left wing of the party. But much of what it contains may already be public knowledge, and with Pelosi's comments about the impeachable nature of what is already known, the conclusion of the report may be undermined.

Several panels in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, including one headed by House judiciary chairman Jerrold Nadler, have just opened investigations into nearly every aspect of Mr Trump's life.
