Philpott resignation will reverberate throughout Indigenous communities, say leaders

Jane Philpott

Ms Philpott's friend, former Attorney General and Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, testified last week that Mr Trudeau and senior members of his government inappropriately tried to pressure her to avoid prosecution of a major Canadian engineering company in a case involving allegations of corruption in Libya.

The opposition leader last week called on the prime minister to resign. He committed to gender parity in cabinet: "It's 2015", he announced, responding to a question about having an equal number of male and female appointees.

That same day, Wilson-Raybould posts an eyebrow-raising letter outlining her record as justice minister and noting a great deal of work remains to be done toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. "Jane Philpott's resignation from cabinet clearly demonstrates a government in total chaos, led by a disgraced prime minister consumed with scandal and focused only on his political survival".

Jane Philpott just gave Justin Trudeau a lesson in doing politics differently.

Trudeau Chief of Staff Katie Telford apparently also told her "we don't want to debate legalities anymore".

This includes cheering on the Conservatives as they recklessly seek to stoke regional divisions, with their claims that the Liberals' determination to shield SNC-Lavalin from prosecution is due to their favoring Quebec's interests at the expense of the oil sector in western Canada.

Philpott has been widely seen as one of Trudeau's most capable ministers.

"(Butts) talked to me about how the statute was set up by Harper that he does not like the law (Director of Public Prosecutions Act) - I said something like that is the law we have", Raybould testified of her December 5, 2018 meeting with Butts to inform him that she was unmoved and would not interfere in SNC-Lavalin's prosecution.

On Monday, Andrew Scheer, the Conservative leader, repeated his call for Trudeau to step down and called on other Cabinet ministers to follow Philpott's example.

Trudeau has accepted Philpott's resignation and will address the matter later on Monday, said a spokesman for the prime minister. In Quebec, where the issue matters most, the Liberals become by default the champion of local head offices, jobs, and incomes, regardless of how the SNC-Lavalin corruption case turns out.

"Then don't delay on climate, don't be a climate delayer", came a voice from the crowd as Trudeau moved on to the subject at hand.

Here's betting that (Prime Minister Justin) Trudeau and his ilk will allow ISIS brides back into Canada. after all, once a Canadian always a Canadian. they'll arrive, probably with a welcome from Minister of Immigration Ahmed Hussen and a big hug from Chrystia Freeland.

Wilson-Raybould praised the "incomparable" Philpott's decision to leave the cabinet, describing her as a "Mother of Country".

The woman continued to shout until the Liberal supporters around clapped and cheered to drown out her voice.

A lawyer, Erskine-Smith said while Wilson-Raybould's testimony was "compelling", there needs to be full airing of facts in a non-partisan setting.

Speaking to a Liberal party rally in Toronto on Monday night, Trudeau thanked Philpott for her service. As minister of health, she worked with Wilson-Raybould in legalizing medical assistance in dying.

"That sort of adds to the controversy - that the Liberals aren't quite able to shake this, it reflects poorly on them", Wilson said.

Wilson-Raybould's opening statement during last Wednesday's Justice committee hearings implicates Butts in a coordinated effort to override a criminal trial on SNC-Lavalin, that also involved Finance Minister Bill Morneau, Canada's top public servant Michael Wernick, Butts' senior PMO colleague Katie Telford and Trudeau himself. Indeed, when Wilson-Raybould resigned from cabinet, Philpott tweeted a picture of the pair with their arms around each other.

True, but the new facts and arguments senior Liberals threw at Wilson-Raybould for four months previous year after she told them she had made up her mind all seemed to be political arguments and threats against her keeping her cabinet post - not new legal arguments.
